Laminate flooring vs luxury vinyl flooring: a comparison

Both laminate and luxury vinyl are fairly similar in appearance, price, functionality, easy installation, and undemanding care, but they do have subtle differences that may make one better than another for certain installations.

The best thing is to have a thorough conversation with your luxury vinyl and laminate retailer to discuss your needs so that you may be guided to the right selection.

The decision is ultimately going to come down to your personal preference and needs.

Indy Floor Source LLC is a 25-year-old, family-owned and operated company known for quality, integrity, consumer education, and installations developed from fine craftsmanship.

This is why we enjoy an A rating on Angie’s List, as well as a 5-star one on Houzz.

It is almost impossible to make a good decision when you are tired, hungry, and headachy. It is difficult to see how the flooring will look when it is in someone else’s building, not your own home.

Our store is a fully stocked mobile showroom where you can shop in the comfort of your own home and hold the samples up to your lighting, colors, and furnishings. Call us for an appointment.

We service the Greater Indianapolis, IN areas, such as Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Castleton, and Indianapolis, and provide free in-home estimates.

They both look similar, as realistic mimics of wood, tile or stone. Laminate flooring, however, is a little more rigid and some feel that this allows for deeper embossing that gives it better texturing and a more realistic look.

If you look at all the info about luxury vinyl, you will also see that some versions, such as plank, have that same rigidity so the difference can be considered minimal.

Waterproof and durable

Both are durable, with a top clear layer that protects against scratches and scuffs. Spills sit at the top so they easily wipe off.

The difference, however, is in waterproofing. Luxury vinyl is completely impervious to water and can be installed anywhere, including the kitchen, bath, and laundry rooms.

Laminate, while highly water-resistant, is made from wood byproducts with a core of high-density fiberboard (HDF). Since wood softens and swells with humidity, it is not always recommended for high moisture places like the bathroom.

Laminate is more rigid and this flooring can even sound a little hollow at times, but a good underlayment takes care of that. If vinyl is of the luxury version, it is a little softer and more flexible.
